Prince Tartaglia has been sick for ten years. He has tried every treatment imaginable, but nothing makes him feel better. Finally, a pair of strange doctors reveals a possible cure: laughter. The king hires a famous comedian named Truffaldino to perform at the palace, but as soon as the prince laughs, an evil witch named Fata Morgana curses him, making him wander the world feverishly searching for three mysterious oranges. The good wizard Celio, Fata morgana's archenemy, helps Tartaglia and his new side kick, Truffaldino, overcome several obstacles on their way to finding the oranges, and Prince Tartaglia returns home with much more fruit.
